Chemical Hoses

Chemical hoses are intended for liquid chemicals both organic and inorganic (acids and bases, salt solutions, paints and varnishes, solvents, etc.) They are used for the transfer of chemicals in chemical processing, transfer and loading/unloading of liquid chemicals (e.g. tank trucks, rail tankers, IBC containers), for diverse technological processes in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical industry, for numerous other industrial processes but also in laboratories. The inner hose layer must be sufficiently resistant to chemical corrosion.

So as to select the right hose in terms of its chemical resistance, it is essential to gather the following data: type of medium (substance transferred by the hose), its state (e.g. liquid, gas), concentration and temperature of the substance, working pressure. The safety data sheet of a chemical substance is critical for the proper hose selection. Check if there is a risk of static charges build-up, particularly for operation in a determined potentially explosive zone.

Food and Beverage Hoses

Hoses intended for food industry can come into contact with food products and semi-finished food products. Hose material must not contain any substances that can migrate into food, endanger human health, deteriorate taste and quality of foodstuff. The inner layer of the food hose is made of high quality and high purity rubber and plastic materials, which are compliant with the regulations of European Union and FDA. These regulations include the requirements concerning:

materials approved to come into contact with food;
allowable content and migration values of additives the quantity of hose components that leak from the hose material into simulants that act like particular types of food;
appropriate marking e.g. symbol (a glass and a fork);

There are separate national standards for potable water. Lots of hoses for food products, particularly the hoses which meet the raised requirements of e.g. US Pharmacopoeia can be also used in the cosmetics industry and pharmaceutical industry. When selecting the food hose, it is important to choose the hose suitable for the particular cleaning method used in the installation e.g. CIP (Cleaning in Place) or sterilisation e.g. SIP (Sterilisation in Place).

Careful selection and assembly of fittings and couplings is equally important for the installation to be hygienic. AISI 316 stainless steel couplings with appropriately finished inner surface of low roughness are in common use (see: stainless steel hygienic couplings in INDUSTRIAL FITTINGS section). The couplings are fitted using worm-drive clamps, bolt clamps or crimped with ferrules.

Steam Hoses and Steam Fittings

Therefore:

correctly match a hose and fittings with a specific application;
follow installation, maintenance, storage and control recommendations as well as health and safety guidance!

Use the following hoses to transfer steam:

special rubber steam hoses;
steel hoses;
PTFE hoses;

In general, rubber steam hoses are used to make longer hose assemblies and they are always mounted with steam safety clamps. Steel and PTFE are most suitable to make shorter hose assemblies, permanently mounted in machines, with welded fittings (steel hoses) or crimped (PTFE hoses). Recommendations and guidelines concerning selection and operation of rubber steam hoses are available in the attachment “Steam rubber hoses handling manual and safety guidance”.

Air and Water Hoses

Flexible hoses for water and air are designed to convey tap water, industrial water, sewage, cooling water, cold and hot water for washdown applications and to transfer compressed air (compressors, pneumatic tools, hose reels). The hoses are made of rubber, PVC, polyurethane, polyethylene and reinforced with textile braid or cord, with plastic or steel wire helix. Except for general purpose hoses this group also covers:

special purpose hoses intended to cool furnaces in steel mills, resistant to high temperature and heat radiation;
lay flat fire hoses on hose reels;
sewage hoses used to empty portable toilets and septic tanks;
hoses for exhaust systems and sanitary installations of yachts and boats;
hoses intended for snow making equipment;
hot air blower hoses used on tank trucks;

There is also a special type of hoses in this group – layflat delivery hoses with a very thin wall, which are collapsible when not in use and that is why they are widely used as fire hoses, fire hydrant hoses, irrigation hoses, watering hoses in agriculture and at construction sites.
Fittings intended for water and air hoses (see INDUSTRIAL FITTINGS) should be mounted with worm-drive clamps and bolt clamps, they can be crimped with ferrules using crimping machines, taped or wired.

General Purpose Hoses

General purpose hoses are used in a wide variety of applications: for water, air, oil and fuel or slightly aggressive chemicals. This range comprises hoses made of PCV (polyvinyl chloride), rubber hoses and hoses made of many other materials. Some hoses, those compliant with hygiene requirements, can be also used to transfer foodstuffs. The hoses, however, shall always be used according to the recommendations given in the catalogue.

They are made of rubber, PVC or polyurethane, with appropriate cord or textile braid reinforcement, and plastic or steel wire helix. Working pressure up to several tens of bar. It is absolutely vital to take into account pressure decrease at higher temperatures while selecting PVC hose.

Carefully selected, worm-drive clamps or bolt clamps should be used to assemble fittings to general purpose hoses. Still, they can also be crimped with ferrules. For more information on couplings, fittings and clamps see INDUSTRIAL FITTINGS.

Camlock Fittings

CAMLOCK couplings make a group of very popular, recognized and reliable couplings for application in industry, in particular in the oil and gas as well as chemical industry. The specifications for the couplings were first laid down in US military standard MIL-C-27487 ( A-A-59326), they are also defined by the European standards EN 14420-7 (former DIN 2828). With their simple design, CAMLOCK couplings are very user friendly. To connect, an adapter is simply inserted into a coupler with the cam arms extended. To lock the adapter in the coupler both cam arms must be pulled down at the same time. The cam arms engage in the groove of the adapter and thus block and press it tightly. A flat elastomeric seal in the groove of the coupler ensures leak tightness. A safety pin in the holes of the coupler can provide additional protection against accidental opening of the cam arms and against disconnection.
